4/5 SWAC Meet Recap

On a cool and cloudy Thursday, the Garfield, Ballard, Chief Sealth, Holy Names, Odea, Eastside Catholic and Rainier Beach Track teams gathered at the Southwest Athletic Complex for the 3rd League meet of the season. Over time, tensions have been rising as the race to qualify for Metros heats up. For each event, the top 24 athletes get a chance to compete against each other in hope of advancing to Districts and then state. This Thursday, Garfield dominated the competition, winning 11 races and placing top 3 in over 20. A school record was broken, and Garfield athletes became some of the lead runners in the state.
Because Garfield did not enter a 4x200m team, the first performance came from Finn Albright and Khalil Johnson in the Men’s 110m Hurdles. Albright ran an extremely competitive race against Beach’s Eyoub Endris. Endris was able to lean over the finish just 0.02s before Albright and win, with Abright collapsing after crossing the line. Both Albright and Johnson set new personal records (PRs) and placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. They are now top 10 in the Metro League. In the Women’s 100m Hurdles, D’Yanni Magano dominated throughout the entire race, finishing in first with a new PR of 16.70s and putting her 2nd in Metro.
In the 100m dash, Garfield gave a strong performance, with Marcel Jones and Jala Alderson being top finisher for Garfield and setting new PRs. In the Men’s 1600m, Lucas Carroll won the race with a new PR of 4:39.24. From the start, Carroll was far ahead of the rest of the runners, and said, “I was slightly motivated by an O’Dea coach telling the guy closest behind me that I went out too hard… and I took that and went, you thought I went out to hard? You thought wrong.” He even went on to say, “I almost panicked at the start and thought I went out too slow… but I’m glad I relaxed that first lap and ended up saving energy for later.” The O’Dea coach was in fact wrong, as Carroll won the race a comfortable 8 seconds in front of any other competition. After this impressive performance, Carroll hopes to get closer and closer to 4:30 by the end of the season. His advice to success is to, “Believe in yourself.”
Garfield placed 5th in the 4x100 Men’s and did not start their Women’s team. Next, in the 400m, Tawaf Aboudou had a strong performance, easily winning the Men’s race in 52.5s, setting a season record, and putting him 3rd in Metro. In the Women’s 400m, Cayce Koehler ran an impressive 1:05.82, setting a PR and placing 3rd. This is Koehler’s first year on the Garfield track team and she is quickly emerging as a new star.
After this came one of the highlights of the meet, the 300-meter Hurdles. This race is entertaining for many reasons. Going into the race, Garfield girls had the top 4 times in Metro and boys also were at the top. It is always exciting to watch hurdlers of all levels attempt to clear the daunting obstacles. In the Men’s 300H, Finn Albright had another outstanding race, winning by nearly a second. The Middlebury commit is ranked 1st in Metro and 4th in State for the event. Khalil Johnson also had a great race, getting a nearly 2 second PR and placing 3rd. In the Women’s 300H, it was Jayda Lewis’s first time ever racing the event. She said, “At first I was very nervous, but then I had good friends to like calm me down, and it ended up going good.” This is a big understatement from Lewis, as she won the race by over 3 seconds, with a time of 47.51s, broke the school record in the event, and put herself 1st in Metro and Districts, and 3rd in state. This was the first of multiple outstanding performances during the meet by Lewis.
Following the 300H, there was an intense showdown in the 800 between Aaron Johnson and Colten Ladd, longtime competitors. Ladd started out with a significant lead, and it looked done for Johnson. As the second lap began, Johnson quickly gained on Ladd, and was able to pull ahead in the last 300m, and place second to O’Dea. A highly entertaining race. In the Women’s 800m, Phoebe Bryar dominated and set a new astonishing PR of 2:30 and placing her 7th in Metro.
In the 200m Dash, Finn Albright won the Men with a stunning time of 23.70s. In the Women’s Jayda Lewis had her second major victory of the night, running the 200 in 26.95s, with D’Yanni Manago right behind in 2nd with a time of 27.44s. She said what helped her to PR was “D’Yanni pushing me in the first hundred meters, and then we pushed each other.”
In the final individual event of the night, Flora Vall-Spinosa ran an incredible 3200m, setting a 35 second PR with a time of 12:18. In the final event, the 4x400, both Men and Women’s teams did well, placing 2nd and 1st respectively. Strong performances from Tawaf Aboudou and Jayda Lewis. Other notable performances of the meet were Jamaica Myres, who won the High Jump by clearing 6 feet and 2 inches, high above the rest of the competition, and tying him for best in state. In addition, Tawaf Aboudou jumped 23 feet and 1 inch in the long jump, giving him 1st place and Shima True jumped 16 feet and 8 Inches to put her in second.
Overall outstanding performances from the Bulldogs, with much more in store.
