Interview with Ada Carr and Abby Fleet
Ada Carr and Abby Fleet are on the Garfield Girls Lacrosse team and they shared their thoughts on the season with us after their 22-9 win over Tahoma.
How did you get this win tonight?
Ada: I think it’s just working together. We have a lot of new girls who didn’t get to play last year because it got cancelled. Working on the team dynamic has been really helpful. We are even better than we were two years ago, and we are winning more games now which is great.
Since there was so much time off between seasons, what did you focus on this past year to prepare? And did you start playing lacrosse from a young age or recently?
Abby: Actually, this is my first year [playing lacrosse], so I was just learning all of the rules because there are a lot of them. So yeah, just learning and picking up the sport this last year has been fun and I have really enjoyed it.
Ada: I do select so I was playing year-round and I was just trying to get better in all aspects of the game and trying to get into shape. Also, waiting for Garfield season as it’s my favorite because it’s the local team and we’re building a community. I started playing in 3rd grade, we were the first girls Wolfpack team in 3rd grade. I started playing select in 6th grade, my dad was the coach in middle school, so he drove me to do bigger and better and to play really hard. So, I did select ever since then and it’s literally the best thing ever.
What has the Garfield lacrosse experience been like? Is it a recent program?
Ada: Well Garfield isn’t a recent program. They started about 15-20 years ago; Seattle Wolfpack is more recent. My favorite thing is it’s laid back and you are allowed to have fun and laugh and joke around. We build a community where we can have awesome wins like we just did, and still have a great time.
Abby: I agree with that; it’s been a great sense of community. Even though it’s my first year, I’ve never felt like it’s been a stressful situation. Everyone is supporting each other and it’s super great. One thing that’s great is that the Garfield team isn’t just Garfield students. There’s Bush students, Downtown, Franklin, and we can all come together and play as one school. Everyone is very nice to everyone else and to me, no bad vibes, everyone is laughing. It’s been a great school sport to enjoy these past two months.
Ada: We are also trying to create access to the sport because it’s a very expensive sport. So we are working on getting a lot of girls scholarships and having people donate to us.
What has been your favorite memory this season?
Ada: Our first loss against Bellarmine Prep because in the first half we were down a lot and feeling a little nervous. But in the second half, we picked it up and played our game and won the second half even though we lost the game. We came together and got our groove back and it was a great feeling.
Abby: I would agree, the Bellarmine Prep game was my favorite memory too. We were losing in the first half but we were able to pick it up and everyone was cheering. We just came together as a team.
How will you prepare for your next game vs Eastlake?
Abby: We’ve brought up our energy and we will go in better equipped as a team and hopefully pull out the win.
