Boys Golf Season Recap

The Garfield golf team ended their 2021 season with a 4-1-1 record.
The golf season started in late February which meant that the team had to play in the winter. ”This caused us to have to play in very poor conditions for much of the season,” senior Griffin Thoreson pointed out. In their first match against the defending district champions, O’Dea, Garfield lost a tough 128-81 match. Then, Garfield beat an undermanned (only had three players) Cleveland team by 60 points before playing a close match against West Seattle. Thanks to freshman Jackson Schlemmer’s clutch ten foot putt on the 9th hole, the match vs West Seattle ended in a tie. Sophomore, Will Nielsen said “that ended up being the most important part of our season because it secured [Garfield] second place.” Had Garfield lost this match, West Seattle (who finished 3-1-2) would have pulled ahead of the Bulldogs in the standings.
Luckily for Garfield, they then went on a three game win streak beating Franklin, Chief Sealth, and Eastside Catholic. Specifically, the match versus Eastside Catholic was gratifying because Garfield played well with pressure on them in a match that wasn’t an obvious win. The victory put Garfield in second place of the south division going into the Metro League Tournament.
The Metro League Tournament featured all Metro League teams, which included the north division who had six of the top seven teams from last year’s tournament. During the morning tee times, it was significantly colder at 39 degrees than later in the afternoon, where it got as high as 57 degrees. This was a factor for Garfield’s top two golfers, Griffin Thoreson and Jack Theiss, as they shot 47 and 46 respectively on the brisk front nine. However, they improved on the warmer back nine, shooting 39 and 45. For the rest of Garfield’s scoring team, Ian Wiltamuth had an impressive 40 on the back nine and finished with 87, while Jack Jassy had a season-best 44 on the front nine and finished with 92. After all, Bishop Blanchet won the Metro League Championship this year after multiple rounds under 80.
The Garfield golf team will lose three of its top five golfers next year, but will retain the rest of the team. This includes three current freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors, as well as more incoming freshmen. So, with next season quickly approaching in September, the team will look to prepare early to build on this year’s 4-1-1 record.
