Garfield vs Cleveland Recap
Jack Jassy
The Garfield golf team played Cleveland High School on Tuesday, March 9th in search of their first win of the season. The team came off a one-sided loss to O’Dea on the opening day of Metro League sports. While O’Dea had the best record in the Metro League last year, Cleveland held the worst at 0-10.
In a lopsided affair, Garfield beat Cleveland 88-20 with the Bulldogs having a decided player advantage. In a typical match, each team has eight players who play and six who get scored. But Cleveland only had three players, with one player scoring 16 points, and the other two players posting two points each. With only three players, it’s very difficult to compete; however, it’s nearly impossible unless all three players post exceptional scores. This did not come to pass, and in the meantime, Garfield’s golfers produced solid scores.
Garfield was led by Jack Theiss who put up 25 points and shot 38 (2 over par). Griffin Thoreson, Ian Wiltamuth, and Hiroshi Koda had 14 points, as Jack Sundberg and Jack Jassy had 11 and 10 points respectively to complete Garfield’s scoring. The 6th hole was a successful one for the Bulldogs as Jack Theiss, Ian Wiltamuth, Hiroshi Koda, and Sam Lopez had pars.
Ian Wiltamuth spoke about the win today, “Couldn’t be much happier to get the entire team out for the first time in over a year and get a win for our new coach.”
This win could prove to be a confidence builder for Garfield since their next match on Friday is a big one vs West Seattle, who finished just behind Garfield in the Metro Championships last year.
