Girls Swim Season Recap
Sofia Ruiz-Murphy
Each of the past four years, the fall swim and dive team has had a different coach. This year was no different, with new Coaches Brennon and Maddie. Due to their guidance and the strong leadership of captains Shay, Sofia, and Tal, the team navigated a unique season. Though the team lost 5 out of their 7 previous state qualifying swimmers, a 6-3 record and 6th place finish at Metros reflect a successful season. The unexpected strength of the team was largely due to team camaraderie, as swimmers pushed each other to be their best. !2 Garfield athletes qualified for finals at Metros, several of whom ended up on the podium: most notably Sophie Pham who won the 100 fly (as a freshman!) and took second in the 100 back. Those also worth mentioning include Maddie Rivard, who took 3rd in the 100 free and 4th in the 100 breast, Naia Woods, who took third in diving, and Shay Camplin who placed 6th in the 100 free and 7th in the 100 backstroke.
The team’s exceptional drive is exemplified through the success of their 200 medley relay team, who didn’t qualify for the state tournament until metro championships, but then went on to place 8th. This relay, made up of Shay Camplin (Senior, backstroke), Maddie Rivard (Sophomore, breastroke), Sophie Pham (Freshman, butterfly) and Jackie Maurice (Senior, freestyle), is indicative of the spirit of the team. Maurice, a first-time state qualifier, PR’ed in her stretch of the state-qualifying performance.
In addition to 3 senior captains, ten other seniors participated in the team, all of whom had an impact on the team's supportive, inclusive, and fun environment. The team thanks all seniors, Lilah, Tal, Dorothy, Shay, Bebe, Camille, Jackie, Sofia, Daphne, and Naia. They will be missed!
The team looks forward to another season of fast swimming next year with many returning swimmers and (hopefully) coaches.
Go bullfrogs!
