Girls Swim Meet One Recap
Hope Yu
A lot of things went wrong for this meet. The bus never showed up, the online time entry system was down, and our team still had many swimmers ineligible to swim. However, these swimmers proved over and over again their commitment to the sport and to the rest of the team by their positive responses to each of these issues. Carpools were arranged and drove off the minute Ms. Lynch announced the bus wasn’t coming, everyone just nodded in understanding when Coach Riley announced that times would be entered using paper and pencil, and - although the relays were not our fastest line-ups by a long shot- we still managed to get a couple metro and district cuts.
The meet was against both West Seattle and Chief Sealth. We beat West Seattle 106 to 73 and Chief Sealth 118 to 50. I was expecting that we would win (and I told this to everyone who felt nervous); however, I did not expect us to win with this much of a gap. Although we had seasoned club swimmers to help us out, I want to say a huge thank you to all the first time swimmers. This was the first meet for many of them and they took each setback with a stride.
Usually swim team does an event after every single meet excluding homecoming. Due to just Covid safety in general, we are trying to reconfigure what that looks like. In the future, we will likely be doing some small masked hikes on Saturdays and outdoor (still masked) movie nights.
Our next meet is against Franklin at Medgar Evers this upcoming Friday the 24th. We are all hoping for another win!
