2020-21 Girls Soccer Preview
Griffin Hintze
Girls soccer is one of the many high school sports that are finally returning in February, part of the Metro Leagues first of two seasons. Due to the sport traditionally having a fall season, they were able to get a full season in before the pandemic hit. Both the varsity and JV teams will return this year, looking to build upon a promising 2019-2020 season.
The varsity squad put up an impressive 8-5-2 record last season on their way to the Metro League playoffs. They managed to get a win over Ingram, before being eliminated at the hands of Holy Names. The ‘19-’20 team had a significant amount of seniors, with 11 of the total 21 players graduating last year. The team will have to look elsewhere for contribution, and have new players step up to replace their contributions.
The tentative schedule for Garfield sports will be mostly, if not only against other Metro League opponents to prevent excess contact. Last year the team went 6-5-1 against Metro opponents, so this new schedule should not be a problem for them.
Select soccer teams have been able to practice for a while due to the sport being considered “medium risk” along with sports like baseball and volleyball. Hopefully the ability to practice will make the quick turnaround to a season easier for the team to handle, and make it back to the Metro League playoffs for another run at the title.
