Garfield vs Washington Recap
Jack Sundberg
The game was long decided and the Garfield starters were watching from the bench as the Bulldog's reserves put up numerous dunks and many 3's, something the team did all night in route to a big win in the first round of the 2022 HoopSource "Hardwood Invite." These reserves (Jamari Jackson-Kinz, Jamaica Myers, Sammy Taylor, Jodarius Owens, and Sejhe Jackson) together put up 33 points in a 2nd half where the clock was continuously running due to Garfield's immense lead, stopping only during free throws.
In response to their play tonight, Head Coach Brandon Roy said, "It's very important because they work really hard from the start of the season. They work just as hard as the guys who get a lot of the minutes." He later added, "We wanna be a deep 10-man, 12-man team so that way when we get in the tournaments we're not gonna be defeated by fatigue, because we got enough guys."
While the team breaks 100 points somewhat often, the Bulldogs 105 point performance ties for the most points the team has scored in over 5 years and is the largest span of victory in the time.
Garfield used all 13 available players and all of them were able to score at least once, with Jaylin Stewart's 22 points leading the way for the Bulldogs. That was Stewart's 3rd time reaching the 20-point mark this season. When asked about the UCONN commit's performance so far this season, Coach Roy had many good things to say about him. "For me as a coach, I think he's done everything really well, not only playing but leading us."
Many other players had strong performances including Myles Daymon, who didn't miss from the field shooting a perfect 6-6 including three 3's. Jamari Jackson-Kinz, who played off the bench, found his stride in the 3rd making three of his four 3PT field goals during the quarter, he scored 16 points on the night. Yemoni Howell shot 4-6, keeping his impressive FG% this season above 70%.
With three competing teams in the building as well as many fans watching, Garfield played even better than advertised and set the tone for the rest of the tournament. The team has now won all six of their games to open the season and will look to continue their rampage on December 18th against a strong Skyline squad, who recently took down the top team in the state in Mount Si.
