Garfield tennis teams swept through Rainier Beach with both boys and girls winning 5-0. This win maintains the boy’s team’s undefeated record for the season and puts the girls at 4-1 as both teams rapidly approach the playoffs.
Boy’s singles 1 Bernardo Savitt won 6-0 6-0, determining the course of the match through overpowering groundstrokes and decisive holds of serve. At boy’s singles 2, Aiden Taylor also won in straight sets with deep returns that set him up for easy finishes at the net. Doubles 1, Daniel Casey and Sam Doherty, won 6-0 6-0 with both players frequently reaching the net and giving their opponents the opportunity to miss. At boy’s doubles 2 Adam Friesz and Owen Tiffany won 6-1 6-0 with aggressive returns and powerful serves that frequently resulted in winning points. Doubles 3, rounding out the boy’s team, Lawton Friedland and Matt Armstrong won 6-0 6-1, earning the team win through clear communication that allowed them to cover every ball.
Girl’s singles 1, Lakelle Bridges, won 6-0 6-0 coming to the net frequently and applying pressure early each point with deep landing serves. Girl’s singles 2, Annika Harding, won 6-0 6-0 as well with aggressive groundstrokes that punished high arc-ing balls. Nicole Wang and Hannah Mai achieved a win at girl’s doubles 1 through heavily spun serves and impeccable net play that targeted their opponent’s weaknesses. Doubles 2, Ling Yang and Maggie Duan, didn’t drop a game in their decisive victory defined by teamwork and precision. Girl’s doubles 3 was a forfeit as Rainier Beach did not have enough players.
