Golf: Garfield vs O'Dea Preview
Jack Jassy
The first match of the Garfield golf season is nearly upon us, and the team starts with a formidable opponent in O’Dea. O’Dea has long been one of the most successful metro league golf teams, with last year arguably being their best ever. In ten matches, O’dea finished 10-0, winning the Metro and 3A District championships. In their only match against Garfield last year, O’Dea put up 151 points (an average of just two over par per player) on their way to a comfortable win. Although O’Dea has many returning golfers, they did lose some key seniors such as Jack Spragins, who played an instrumental role in last year’s run.
Garfield enters this matchup coming off a 5-5 record last year, with a new head coach (Chris Englund), and looks to improve on that record this season. On the matchup against O’Dea, Senior golfer, Griffin Thoreson, feels “it’s a tough first match of the season, but we’ll learn where we are as a team and what we need to work on.” There is no better test for Garfield’s growth than O’Dea, given that O’Dea comes in as the best team in the district. Playing O’Dea close, even in a losing effort, might be a confidence builder for the Bulldogs.
