Garfield vs Lincoln Recap
Aaron Orbeck
Garfield’s 103-48 victory against Lincoln High School was significant for two reasons: it was the Bulldogs’ first time breaking 100 points this season, and it was the long-anticipated debut of Kenzel Massey.
Coming into this game many fans expected the Bulldogs to extend their winning streak to 12 games, but everybody had their eye on Kenzel Massey, the tall forward who had yet to play a game this season. Even with all the pressure, he exceeded all expectations with an electrifying 29-point performance. Massey posed a dual threat to Lincoln from the 3-point line and in the paint. He tied Jaylin Stewart with a team leading seven rebounds while also making an incredible 6 out of 10 three-point attempts. Massey showed this game that he is a good fit for this already star-studded Garfield team. While players like Koren Johnson (who reached the 1000 career point mark) and Jaylin Stewart had another good game, Massey was able to carry some of the workload normally on their shoulders.
This Garfield roster is full of stars and playmakers at every position and Kenzel Massey is a welcome addition to a team that has a very real chance at the state championship this year. The Bulldog’s next opportunity to extend their winning streak is Tuesday January 25th against Lakeside who is currently 7-5.
