Garfield vs Franklin Recap
Autumn Henson
The Garfield Volleyball team earned another win on their Senior Night against Franklin in three quick and consecutive sets. This comes after a disappointing loss to the Quakers in last season’s playoffs, in which the Bulldogs were defeated in the fifth set. GHS started off slow, trailing behind Franklin with a seven point deficit. This gap was closed quickly thanks to consistent serving from senior Kaili Solverud and strong attacks and blocks from senior Jane Fix. Both the lead and energy transferred between the two teams over the course of the set, but the Bulldogs finished in overtime with a score of 26-24.
In the second set, the Bulldogs continued with minimal energy and slow play against a similarly paced opponent. Garfield’s volleyball team has struggled with playing down to the speed of many of their competitors, and that was evident in this match. However, they were able to pull it back with a set of well-placed tips and line shots from Fix and right-side Ruby Kaill. The set ended close at 25-22 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The third set was a sweep for Garfield. Although the final score was relatively close, GHS pulled off a series of powerful attacks from various hitters in a new line-up. The majority of Franklin’s gained points were due to unforced errors, with many of the Bulldog’s attacks sailing out of bounds. The set ended at 25-20, and the Bulldogs came out with the same 3-0 score as they had achieved in last year’s in-game season against the Quakers.
