Garfield vs Ferndale Recap
Aaron Orbeck
In a hard-fought game Garfield defeated Ferndale 20-7 to clinch their spot in the 3A State Tournament.
A low scoring affair, Ferndale’s only score came late in the 4th quarter on a short slant route. Garfield’s defense once again showed its prowess after making stop upon stop throughout the game. If their defense can keep this up during the tournament Garfield’s opponents will be hard pressed to score.
In addition to Garfield’s defensive performance, their offence also played well. Jacolby Cochran once again had an impactful game. Managing 206 yard and a touchdown off only 5 receptions. He nearly had another touchdown after an incredible 55-yard run after a catch on a short pass. He beat out multiple defenders before finally being taken down at the 1-yard line. Receiver Rowley Canale finished the job when he caught a pass on the 5-yard line before diving through a defender. Marcus Merkelbach, the kicker, continued his good run of form with two made field goals and two successful extra points.
The Bulldogs looked in good shape after this win that was never in doubt. This result secured them the 12th seed in the 3A State Tournament and 4th in the Metro League standings. Hopefully, Garfield can replicate this performance against 5th seed Marysville-Pilchuck High School this Saturday on the road.
