Garfield vs Eastside Catholic Recap
Autumn Henson
For the first time this season, the Garfield Volleyball team was defeated by Eastside Catholic. Both teams went into last night’s match with perfect records of 5-0, and the Bulldogs hoped to keep their momentum going after a hot win against Cleveland on Monday, in which GHS took the first set 25-6. The team started off strong against Eastside Catholic, leading in the first set at 9-2 due to powerful serves and consistent defense. However, the Crusaders fought back with high blocks and deep swings to take the set at 25-21.
In the second set, the Bulldogs’ energy waned as ESC sent over a varied set of serves that threw Garfield’s passers off balance and out of system. A powerful back-row attack from the Crusaders made its debut in the second set, and was very difficult for the Bulldogs to return. After a long pause due to an officiating issue, Garfield’s energy was even lower, and Eastside Catholic won at 25-14.
The third set was long and tiring. The lead was passed back and forth between Garfield and Eastside Catholic, with both teams eager to take the set. Near the end, Garfield pulled together a few scramble plays to win a few more points as the Crusaders were one point away from ending the match. Despite their strong efforts, the Bulldogs lost the third set 25-20. The two schools will face off again next week in the playoffs.
