Garfield vs Eastside Catholic Recap
Jack Jassy
In their last match of the season, Garfield golf squared off against Eastside Catholic aiming to finish the season with a win. Garfield achieved the goal and won 104-99 in a close match.
The match was set up to be close as both teams had tied a common opponent, West Seattle, earlier in the season. In the first pairing, Eastside Catholic’s 1-2 players were even with Garfield’s 1-2 players with an average round of 44. But the margin was widened as Garfield’s 3-4 pairing outscored Eastside Catholic’s by 8 points, giving Garfield a healthy lead. Garfield’s lead was trimmed as Eastside Catholic’s 5th and 6th scorers put in a valiant effort, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their steep deficit.
On senior day, Garfield’s seniors Griffin Thoreson, Ian Wiltamuth, and Hiroshi Koda all shined with 19, 19, and 16 points respectively. Juniors Jack Theiss and Jack Jassy also had strong rounds contributing 20 and 17 points respectively, and Jack Sundberg finished off his freshman season with 13 points.
While matches against other teams are finished, Garfield has the Metro League Tournament on April 5th, which is an 18 hole tournament with all Metro League teams. Due to the shortened season and COVID, the Metro League Tournament is the only postseason event scheduled this year.
