Garfield vs Cleveland Recap
Jack Sundberg
Last Friday night, Garfield High Schools’ Bulldogs returned to the court for a game against Cleveland High Schools’ Eagles, which would turn out to be a thriller. A crushing 111-2 win for Garfield. While Garfield was heavily favored to win, a blowout of this size is incredibly rare.
At the very start of the game, Garfield won the tip and Sophomore Katie Fiso recovered it to score a layup with a burst of speed. Playing in just her third game on this varsity squad, Fiso made 12 of 15 field goal attempts putting up 22 points to help the Bulldogs cruise to a 2-0 start to the season. Six other Bulldogs would end up scoring at least 10 points including senior Lucille Richardson, who was interviewed after the game. “It feels good,” Richardson said of the win. “It improves our energy even more; we really want to work on that and uplift everyone.”
The team’s defense was an iron wall, barely letting passes through let alone shots. The team ended up with a total of 40 steals! The Bulldogs came out firing and had streaks of 50 unanswered points twice. The Bulldog's 111 points is good enough for the most points scored by Garfield since at least 2006, which is as far back as records go on maxpreps.com.
With two wins to open the season and increasing team chemistry, Garfield looks to keep rolling for their next game on the road on December 8th at 7:15 against a strong Seattle Prep team.
