Garfield vs Chief Sealth Recap
Autumn Henson
The Garfield Volleyball team held on to their undefeated record this week in their most recent game against Chief Sealth, taking the victory in the minimum three sets. Finishing the game in just under an hour, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start. Energy on the court was low, and serves were frequently missed on both sides in the first set. However, spirits rose as the players selected spots on the court to aim for, and the Bulldogs came out with a win at 25-22, with the primary loss of points being from unforced errors.
In the second set, Garfield trailed Chief Sealth by several points due to serve receive errors, as a left-handed server targeted the back right-handside of the court. The Bulldogs quickly bounced back into the lead with varied sets of attacks from middles Tiana Tran and Jane Fix, outsides Octavia Hoffman and Taya Blankenship-Poydras, and opposite Tahja Henderson. Fix and Hoffman proved to be a powerful front-row defense with few right-side attacks making it over their block. The second set ended with a staggering score of 25-13 in favor of Garfield.
The third set proved difficult for the Bulldogs, as Chief Sealth pulled off surprise attacks in which they free-balled on the first or second touch, which is uncharacteristic of typical volleyball play. However, Hoffman fought back with powerful angled shots that were unreturned by Sealth, and the set ended with a definitive 17-25 final score.
