Garfield vs Bishop Blanchet Recap
Aaron Orbeck
In their first game of the season, the Bulldogs beat Bishop Blanchet 70-53. A game that was never in doubt, it was a solid showing for Garfield who look to be legitimate state contenders this year.
Even without newcomer Kenzel Massey and surprise returner Koren Johnson, the Bulldogs were still able to be productive. After jumping out to a lead early in the game, the Bulldogs played great defense in the first half. Good rebounding led by Sherrell Mccullum Jr., who had 11, allowed Garfield to keep up the pressure. Jaylin Stewart led the scoring with 12 points and Raphiel Justice had the most assists with 7. After a dominant first two quarters the Bulldogs had a 47-20 lead over Blanchet.
However, perhaps caused by overconfidence, Garfield began to play sloppier in the second half. A slew of turnovers and poor offensive possessions allowed Bishop Blanchet to start to catch up. Luckily the 27 point lead they entered with kept it from getting close. Against a better team this sloppiness might have been more dangerous. It’s likely once Koren Johnson returns a lot of these issues will be resolved.
The Bulldogs will face Cleveland in an away game this Friday at 8:30. Cleveland went 3-6 last season, so Garfield is expected to have a dominant performance.
