Garfield vs Bainbridge Recap
Aaron Orbeck
The Bulldogs opened their season on Friday with a dominant 48-8 win over the Bainbridge Spartans.
The scoring started early after Bainbridge completed an 11-yard touchdown pass. A successful 2-point conversion put them up 8-0. However, that touchdown was the extent of Bainbridge's scoring for the rest of the game.
The Bulldogs responded quickly with an incredible 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jacolby Cochran which brought the score to 8-7 after a successful extra point from Marcus Merkelbach.
The 2nd quarter was full of even more touchdowns from Garfield. The first of three came from a 2-yard run by running back Reon Hampton. The second was a 25-yard run by quarterback E.J. Caminong which was followed by a 24-yard diving catch by receiver Jacolby Cochran. Those touchdowns put the Bulldogs ahead 27-8 at halftime.
The 3rd quarter began with Jacolby Cochran’s third touchdown on a 59-yard pass and run that featured several successful jukes and spins. He continued his dominance with another nice contested catch in the endzone to make the score 41-8.
In the 4th quarter slot receiver Reggie Witherspoon scored the final touchdown of the game on a motion handoff that he ran 58 yards, breaking multiple tackles along the way. Another successful PAT from Marcus Merkelbach meant that the game finished 48-8.
This fantastic performance bodes well for Garfield as they hope to win their first ever state title. Hopefully for Bulldogs fans, Jacolby Cochran and the rest of the team can continue with another impressive performance against Lake City High School (Idaho) on September 11th at 1:00 PM at Memorial Stadium.
