Football Midseason Summary
Griffin Hintze
The Garfield football season has been a story of ups and downs so far through the first three games. The team currently sits at 1-2 on the year, with the losses coming against Seattle Prep and powerhouse Eastside Catholic, and the lone win coming against rivals Rainier Beach.
Garfield opened the season on a high note, defeating Beach 28-22 in a thriller. Led by performances by Marcus Merkelbach and Quinton Jordan, the team looked to have momentum heading into their next game. The game versus Seattle Prep ended in disappointing fashion, with the Bulldogs being shut out in a 28-0 loss. This run continued into last week's game versus Eastside Catholic as Garfield was once again shutout this time 42-0, although this matchup was due to be the toughest of the year as Eastside is by all accounts the best team in the state.
Things aren't all down for Garfield though. With a win on Friday, March 26th against Ballard, the team can punch it’s ticket to the Metro League playoffs even before the final matchup versus O’Dea on the first of April. Although the season may have hit a rough patch for the Bulldogs there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the remainder of the season.
