Garfield vs Marysville-Pilchuck Recap
Aaron Orbeck
On November 13th, the Garfield Bulldogs lost 52-21 against the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in the first round of the state tournament. This loss marks the end of the Bulldog’s season.
Through the 1st quarter the game looked competitive. The Tomahawks jumped out to a 14-0 lead but Garfield quickly responded with a long touchdown catch from Jacolby Cochran. Then, in the 2nd quarter Marysville-Pilchuck extended their lead 21-7 with a 55-yard run. On the next play Garfield scored another touchdown on a 95-yard pass. Unfortunately, that was the last score Garfield until late in the 4th quarter when Raphiel Justice caught a short pass wide-open in the endzone. Throughout most of the game the Bulldogs couldn’t get through Marysville-Pilchuck's staunch defense. Additionally, the Tomahawks’ offense was carried by running back Dylan Carson who scored three touchdowns on 281 yards and 20 carries.
While this loss is not the way the Bulldogs wanted to end their season, there is plenty to be proud of. They ended with a solid 5-2 regular season record and started off hot with four dominant wins. Garfield also won hard fought games against Seattle Prep and Ferndale. There were also multiple players who made massive contributions to the team. Receiver/defensive back Jacolby Cochran finished the season with 11 touchdowns and 1,124 yards in addition to his multiple interceptions. Running backs Reon Hampton and Jimmy Miller each also made a significant impact. Hampton ended the season with nine touchdowns and 881 yards and Miller finished with seven touchdowns and 465 yards. Without the help of these players the Bulldogs’ record would probably be much worse.
Despite the frustrating postseason loss, the Garfield football team should hold their heads high for having played great football throughout the season and hopefully next year they’ll come back even stronger.
