2020-21 Cross Country Preview
Hayden Murphy
The 2019-2020 season was a fun and successful one for the Garfield cross country team, with multiple standout performances.
Last season, the team competed in ten different meets, including four league meets and three invitationals. They also raced at the Metro League Championships, where the boys and girls varsity teams both earned a spot at the district finals. Varsity boys came in 8th at Metros, and the Varsity girls came in 6th. The boys JV team placed 2nd at Metros, and the girls JV placed 3rd. At the District Championships, the boys team placed 8th, and the girls placed 6th, which wasn’t good enough for either team to qualify for State. However senior Donovan Jantz from the boys team, and Junior Hannelore Schreder-Peters from the girls team qualified to compete at State individually.
Almost everyone on the Varsity boys team last year graduated, so the returning runners will need to step up this year for a successful season. The girls team is mostly returning, so they will look to improve on last year's results. The team began training at the start of the 2020-2021 school year up until winter break, and just started back up training in small groups again for the upcoming season.
Cross country is considered a low-risk sport, due to the fact that it is outside and easy to socially distance. The competitive season is slated to begin on 22nd, and end on April 17 based on the new guidelines from WIAA. The team is focused on improving fitness and getting prepared for the season, and are excited to be able to compete in the upcoming months.
