Boys Soccer Season Recap
Jordan Kim
Last Thursday, the Garfield boys soccer team played their last playoff game against Rainier Beach, ending their season with a 3-0 win. The Bulldog's season started with a 1-1 tie against Chief Sealth. Chief Sealth ended their season in second place in the Metro standings with a record of 6-1-1. The following week, the Bulldogs got a strong victory over Cleveland with a 6-0 win. Garfield continued their undefeated campaign with a tough tie against West Seattle 2-2. Following the West Seattle game, the Bulldogs tied O'Dea 2-2 with a late-game winning penalty by leading goal scorer Dylan Paine. Unfortunately, Garfield got their first loss due to a 5-1 loss against their neighboring rivals, Franklin. The Bulldogs then responded the next week with a 6-2 win over Eastside Catholic. That same week, the Bulldogs took on cross-town rivals, Rainier Beach, and lost a heartbreaker 1-0. Garfield's boys team ended their season with two straight wins against Cleveland (4-0) and Rainier Beach (3-0). They ended their season with a record of 4-2-3 and placed 10th in the Metro standings.
Garfield had a relatively young team this season. The Bulldogs roster has eight juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. With many close results, the Bulldogs thought they could have gotten a lot more wins this season. The teams leading goal scorer junior Dylan Paine reflects on the season by saying, “We were pretty up and down, we started strong and tied a couple good teams then got some wins but managed to lose to some teams we know we should’ve beat.” Even though the Bulldogs lost some games, the team responded every time by winning games the next week. After they lost to Franklin 5-1, Garfield then the next week responded by beating Eastside Catholic 6-2. Similarly, after the Bulldogs lost to Rainier Beach, they responded again by ending the season with 2 wins against Cleveland and Rainier Beach. These trends in the Bulldog's season showed the heart and response to adversity this team had. Dylan Paine commented on the team's response to adversity by saying, “However, we kept our heads up and ended the season with a dominating win over Cleveland for senior night and another win over Rainier Beach to end the season.”
The Bulldog's soccer team has a bright future for next year with 11 returning varsity players. Next year the season will most likely go back to normal with Garfield playing more games against not only South end teams but also North end teams and a Metro and State tournament.
