Boys Golf team hungry to build on last year's success

The 2019-20 Garfield golf team had a successful season last year and will look to continue its success this year. Last year, the team went 5-5 in their regular season play and finished 8th of the 16 metro league teams in the Metro League Tournament. This earned them a spot in the district tournament as a team which hadn’t happened in the last five years. Their postseason run ended at districts as they did not qualify for the state tournament.
In the 2020-21 Garfield golf season, the team will look to build on their success from last year and make it to the State Tournament. There were six seniors on the team a year ago, so this new squad will have large shoes to fill in order to improve on last year’s effort.
They are led by seniors Griffin Thoreson and Ian WIltamuth, as well as juniors Jack Theiss and Jack Jassy. All were key parts of last year’s team and junior Jack Theiss is “very confident in our team’s improvement over the summer.” Last year, Theiss had the 2nd best Garfield score in the Metro League tournament.
While having a sports season has been uncertain this year, golf is considered a “low” risk sport. This makes a full season very likely to happen this year either in late winter or early spring. Golf is normally played in the fall and fall sports are slated to begin competitions on March 8th. Usually, golf is played in spring or in the fall, so what effect weather will have on this season is an interesting question that will soon be answered.
