Baseball Week One Recap

After an 11-6 win against Hazen, the Garfield ends their first week of games 1-2.
The Bulldogs started their week with a game on Tuesday against a formidable Issaquah HS opponent. Garfield struggled to get their offense going only able to secure a handful of hits while Aaron Herst, Zac Meyer, and Tommy Lessig allowed a combined 10 runs (7 earned) in just 5 innings.
After that rough loss to start the season the Bulldogs had to recover quickly for a game the next day at Newport HS. A much more competitive game, the Bulldogs almost tied the game in the 7th inning but the game was stopped after it was deemed too dark to continue. The Garfield players were understandably incensed after what could have been a win was marked down as a loss.
For the final game of the week, Garfield hosted a home game on Friday against Hazen HS. In their best game of the week, the Bulldogs pummeled the Hazen pitchers in the 3rd inning for 10 runs. This scoring run essentially put the game out of reach for Hazen even after they scored all 6 of their runs in the 5th inning. Two standout players from this game were Oliver Hogan and Mitchell Thomas-Fair. Each managed to draw a walk, scoring a run, get a hit (Hogan got 2), and get 2 RBIs each. Aaron Herst pitched a great game with 4 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
The Bulldogs had a decent start to their season with these non-conference games. Fans will hope that they can maintain the momentum from the win against Hazen in the 3 games they have scheduled for next week. The first game will take place at Shorecrest HS on Monday, March 21st.
