2021-2022 Girls Swim Season Preview
Hope Yu
If the Garfield Swim Team is known for anything, it’s for living up to the word ‘team’. Until now, I’ve never known a group of swimmers so committed to creating an environment focused on healthy team spirit and getting through the season no matter the setbacks. Every year we have a solid number of incoming freshmen, but this year there has been an increase in swimmers of all levels and grades. The captains - Hope Yu (me), Teja Zeribi, Evelyn Bartlett - are incredibly excited for the upcoming season and are working hard to plan fun events and practices for all the team members.
A main goal the captains had going into the season was to increase the number of swimmers coming from various backgrounds. We wanted to provide an accessible environment where swimmers can feel comfortable swimming and competing regardless of their skill level. Competitive swimming and swim lessons can demand a lot from families financially and we are doing our best to work around that barrier. Furthermore, signing up can be a complicated process for numerous reasons (language barrier, financially, equipment etc.) and we are trying our best to streamline the process.
Going into our upcoming meet with Holy Names, we are just excited to go race and have fun. In swimming, it is difficult to get in shape within three weeks of practice. Considering this, the focus of the first one or two meets is just to swim some decent times and set yourself up for a good rest of the season. Considering what I have been seeing in practice, I have high hopes for all of our swimmers. Thank you to all the swimmers for being so understanding and committed to having an excellent season.
